Twenty Questions

When do children need to be seen for a check up?

The ADA recommends that children be seen around age one. With a one-year-old, we do not attempt to do the full cleaning with x-rays. It is possible to check to see that the teeth are well formed and check for "Baby Bottle Decay."

How old do children have to be before they are subject to decay?

Decay can appear as soon as the teeth appear in the mouth. Baby Bottle Decay can be extremely serious and is the result of allowing a child to nurse continuously from a bottle with formula, milk, juice or any liquid with sugar or carbohydrates. Don't give your child a bottle to take to bed.

Is thumbsucking dangerous?

Thumbsucking should stop by the time the permanent teeth are ready to come into the mouth. This is often about age 5 ½.

What toothpaste should I use?

Use fluoridated toothpaste with the ADA Seal of Acceptance. This assures that it meets standards of safety and effectiveness. It also means that the advertising claims are reviewed for accuracy. There are special ingredients in some toothpastes that help reduce sensitivity, reduce tartar, or help the gums. Ask if you think you need these pastes. Children should only use an amount equal to the size of a pea.

Is Wichita water fluoridated?

No! The natural fluoride level of about 0.36 ppm is not sufficient to give the full protection your child deserves. Children drinking Wichita water should have supplemental fluoride prescribed from age 3 to 16. Fluoridation has been practiced in America and Kansas for over 50 years. A lifetime of protection costs about the same as tablets for one year. Taxpayers pay for the excessive decay through Medicaid taxes, dental bills and insurance premiums. Private funds are available to fluoridate. It is unconscionable that the Mayor allows political factors to override the needs of children. Almost all major cities are fluoridated.
This low commitment to public health reinforces a very negative stereotype of Wichita.

How do I get a copy of my dental records?

You can request a copy of records directly from your previous dentist or we will be happy to request them for you.

Is tooth bleaching available?

Yes, bleaching is safe, effective and inexpensive. If you've always wanted to do it, do it now!

Where can I get more information?
